How to Record Your Screen in a Shape in Record My
Open the Mode Picker
Click “Start Recording” in the main window (⌘R) or choose “Start Recording…” from the menu bar to open “Choose what to record”.
Pick Your Shape
Choose “Rounded” for a soft-corner area, “Ellipse” for an oval, or “Lasso” for a free-hand outline.
Drag or Draw It
For “Rounded” and “Ellipse”, drag over the part of the screen you want. For “Lasso”, draw your outline around it by hand. Recording starts right after your selection.
Stop and Open the Editor
Click “Stop” on the recording bar. A hint in the export bar reminds you that transparent formats keep the area outside the shape clear.
Export With See-Through Edges
Click “Export” and pick “ProRes 4444”, “HEVC + alpha”, “Animated GIF” or “PNG sequence” under “With transparency”, then choose a folder.
Choose the Format for Your Edges
Every format under “With transparency” keeps the space around your shape clear, ready to drop over a slide, a website or another video. See exporting with a transparent background.
- “ProRes 4444” for pro video editing.
- “HEVC + alpha” for compact video with see-through edges.
- “Animated GIF” for quick, shareable loops.
- “PNG sequence” for a folder of individual frames.
- “MP4 (H.264)”, under “Opaque”, places your shape on a solid black background.
Shapes With Your Camera Too
In the Screen + Camera setup window, the same shapes sit in the “Capture” row: “Rounded”, “Ellipse” and “Freeform”, the free-hand one. The preview shows a dashed outline as a reminder, and you draw your shape after you press “Start Recording”.
“Save Video” keeps the original, full rectangular recording. Your shape comes to life when you choose “Export”.
Questions
Can I record my screen in a circle?
Yes. Choose “Ellipse” and drag out your oval. Drag it as round as you like, then export under “With transparency” for clean, round edges.
What is the Lasso tile?
“Lasso” is the free-hand outline. Draw around exactly what you want to show, in any shape. In the Screen + Camera setup it’s called “Freeform”.
Can I add arrows or text to a shaped recording?
Yes. Use the tool palette at the bottom-right of the preview to add arrows, text, highlights and more. See annotating your recording.
You can do this with Record My on your Mac.
