How to Record Part of Your Screen in Record My
Open the Mode Picker
Click “Start Recording” in the main window (⌘R) or choose “Start Recording…” from the menu bar to open “Choose what to record”.
Set Your Options
In the options bar, choose a “FRAME RATE”, your “SOUND”, and whether the “Cursor” shows in the video.
Drag Out Your Area
Click the “Area” tile, which reads “Drag a rectangle”, then drag over the part of the screen you want. A size readout shows the width and height as you go.
Record
Recording starts right after your selection. Everything outside your area is dimmed and a soft red border pulses around it, and neither appears in the video.
Stop and Save
Click “Stop” on the recording bar to open the Motion Editor, then click “Save Video” and choose where to keep the .mov.
Show Exactly What Matters
An area recording frames one chart, one panel or one corner of a busy app. Your viewers skip the clutter and go straight to the point.
While you record, the floating bar lets you pause, remove the last 5 seconds or retake from scratch. See fixing mistakes while you record.
Want a Softer Shape?
Besides “Area”, the mode picker offers “Rounded”, “Ellipse” and “Lasso” for soft corners, an oval or a free-hand outline. These shapes are part of Record My Ultra, and you’ll find them in recording in a shape.
Questions
Is the red border in my video?
No. The dimmed surroundings and the pulsing red border only help you see your area while you record. They never appear in the video.
Can I turn my area recording into a vertical video?
Yes, with Record My Ultra. In the editor’s “Format” module, pick “Portrait 9:16” and reframe your take for sharing. See making a vertical video.
Where does my recording go?
Every take appears under “RECENT RECORDINGS” in the main window. Click a row to reopen it, or use “Save Video” to put a copy wherever you choose.
You can do this with Record My on your Mac.
