How to Make a Vertical Video in Record My

  1. Record as Usual

Click “Start Recording”, pick any mode in “Choose what to record”, and click “Stop” when you’re done. Your recording opens in the Motion Editor.

  2. Switch to Portrait

In the Studio panel on the right, find “Format” and choose “Portrait 9:16”. The preview becomes a tall, phone-shaped frame.

  3. Choose a Backdrop

Under “Backdrop”, pick “Blur”, “Gradient” or “Black”. It fills the space around your clip, so every frame looks finished.

  4. Frame the Shot

Choose “Fit” to show the whole recording, or “Fill” to cover the frame edge to edge. Fine-tune with “Zoom”, “Horizontal” and “Vertical”.

  5. Reposition by Hand

Click the “Reposition” chip on the canvas, then drag the clip into place and pinch to zoom. Click “Done” when it looks right.

  6. Export

Click “Export” and choose “MP4 (H.264)”, then pick a folder in the save panel. More on formats in saving as an MP4.

Made for the Small Screen

Phones are tall. Most screens are wide. “Portrait 9:16” brings the two together in one click.

“Fill” zooms in on what matters, like a menu, a button or a line of text. “Fit” keeps the whole picture and lets the backdrop frame it. Before you export, the “Result” module shows the final pixel size and duration.

Make It Land at a Glance

Short videos reward clear moments. Cut straight to the good part with trimming, then add arrows, text or numbered steps with annotations, so your point comes across even with the sound off.

To keep your voice or system sound in the export, leave “Speed” at “1×” in the “Output” module.

Questions

Can I go back to the original wide shape?

Yes. Choose “Native” in the “Format” module at any time, and your recording returns to its original shape.

Does “Save Video” keep the portrait frame?

“Save Video” saves your original recording as a .mov, just as you captured it. For the 9:16 frame, use “Export”, which carries every edit you make in the editor.

Which resolution should I choose?

“Auto” in the “Output” module is a great place to start. You can also pick a size from “480p” to “4K”, and the “Result” module shows the exact pixels before you export.

You can do this with Record My on your Mac.
